Who issues the apostille?

Despite the fact that today trips abroad have become more accessible for Ukrainians, the entire process is complicated by the collection and preparation of a number of documents. In order to obtain permission to enter a country and freely use documents on the territory of another state, they must be legalized. Today, this can be done in two ways: by apostille or consular legalization. A simpler option is to obtain an apostille form, however, this type of legalization is valid only for countries participating in the Hague Convention. Therefore, if you are planning a trip to a country that recognizes this type of legalization, you will inevitably encounter the apostille procedure.

What is an apostille and who affixes the stamp?

In addition to the fact that the question immediately arises: “Who puts an apostille?”, many do not even know what it is. Despite the existence of the wording to put an apostille stamp, in fact, it would be more correct to say to receive an apostille form. Since this entire process involves the issuance of a certain form, which contains not only a stamp, but also information regarding the institution that issued the form, the date of receipt, as well as the full name, position and signature of the person who issued the document.

An apostille is a form of legalization of documents that allows them to be freely used for a variety of purposes abroad. In this way, you can legalize a variety of papers, including diplomas and certificates, court certificates, identity documents, certificates and many others. At the same time, the type of document determines who puts the apostille stamp, or rather which institution does it. In Ukraine, the following government agencies are authorized to carry out apostille:

  • Ministry of Justice;
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Ministry of Education.

In addition, the period for affixing a stamp also depends on the type of document and the urgency of execution.
